Executive order cutting off federal funding for NPR and PBS
Stage 5 of 5: Outcome (Blocked by court) · Closed, settled, decided · Last development Jul 2026
A May 2025 executive order told agencies to stop funding NPR and PBS, citing bias. Separately, Congress voted in July 2025 to claw back about $1.1 billion already set aside for public media, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting announced it would close. On 31 March 2026 Judge Randolph Moss ruled the order unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination and permanently barred agencies from enforcing it.
The ruling does not restore the money Congress rescinded; that was a lawful vote of Congress. The White House had said it expected to win in the end, but the administration did not appeal.
