Reported White House help for the Tate brothers (allegation)
Stage 2 of 5: Inquiry · Letters and records requests · Last development 20 Oct 2026
Lawmakers are asking whether administration officials helped Andrew and Tristan Tate, brothers who face rape and sex-trafficking charges in the UK. ProPublica reported that Paul Ingrassia, a White House official who had been the brothers' lawyer, told senior DHS officials to return electronic devices seized when the brothers entered the US in February 2025, saying the request came from the White House. Lawmakers also cite reports that envoy Richard Grenell raised the brothers' case with Romanian officials. House Judiciary Democrats now ask the Justice and State Departments about the UK's extradition request.
Allegation only. The account of Ingrassia's request comes from ProPublica's sources; Ingrassia denies intervening and no official body has made a finding. Grenell's reported role comes from press reports cited by lawmakers. The brothers' charges are accusations, not convictions.

[2]
Judge Louis refuses to hear the brothers' extradition cases together; their lawyer says the hearings are set for 19 November (Andrew) and 20 November (Tristan). [7]
Magistrate Judge Lauren Louis in Miami denies bail to both brothers, finding they did not show special circumstances; prosecutors argued they are a flight risk. [6]
U.S. Marshals arrest the brothers in Miami on the UK's extradition request (59 charges). Their lawyer calls the arrests a "political hit"; the brothers deny wrongdoing. [4]
Sens. Blumenthal and Peters ask White House Chief of Staff Wiles and Counsel Warrington whether Ingrassia acted on his own or at White House direction, request DHS records, and ask DHS Inspector General Cuffari to investigate. [3]
ProPublica reports that Ingrassia, then the White House liaison to DHS, told senior DHS officials in writing to return the brothers' seized devices and stressed that the request came from the White House; DHS officials feared it could interfere with a federal investigation. The devices were not returned. [1]
Rep. Raskin first asks the administration about the case, citing reports that Grenell raised it with Romanian officials; per House Judiciary Democrats, the administration has not substantively answered. [2]
Customs and Border Protection examines the brothers' baggage and detains all their electronic devices when they enter the US (DHS statement to ProPublica). [1]
